Cooler Master Power Supply

Introduction

Cooler Master has sent TWL another fine product to review called 550W “Real Power” Power Supply. Cooler Master is a peripheral manufacturer of great products ranging from computer cases, to heat sinks for just about everything inside a PC to Power Supplies and fan speed controllers. So once this 550W “Real Power” PSU showed up at our labs, we immediately through it into one of our gaming rigs and put it through its paces. Let’s take a look at how it did.

With the power supply being the power sub station of your rig, most PC users have a misunderstanding of the criticality of its capabilities to perform. PC users who have upgraded their PCs many times over through out the last couple of years and are still using a power supply which is a few years old are more than likely under powering their rig and are running on borrowed time. Several friends of this reviewer have had their power supply fail and when it did it took out motherboards, a CPU and even a hard drive. If you’re a PC gamer who upgrades their PC every two years and decided to save a few dollars by not replacing the power supply with a newer one or even a more powerful one, you may be gambling with time, and loss of performance.

The box which the Cooler Master 550W “Real Power” Power supply comes in is the Cooler Master standard white, black and trimmer in purple and stamped with the products features on the sides and back of the box. Inside, the power supply secured tightly in foam to prevent shifting and damage during shipping. The front of the box is stamped with a few important facts such as a 5 year warranty which is very important to those PC users out there who want a power supply that backed by a warranty which will last the life most the components, essentially giving the user the most time for their hard earned dollar. The box is also stamped with the icon 80 Plus, which means the 550W PSU is an 80+% efficient PSU under normal loads. This efficiency is note-worthy to everyone concern about conserving energy and having the least amount of heat being produced due to load demands of the rig. The key features stated on the back of the box are

  1. Eco-Design for energy and money saving by Active PFC. (>0.99) / High Efficiency (<80%)
  2. Super silent operation 120mm fan with intelligent speed controller makes superb heat dissipation at low noise (17dBA)
  3. Worry-Free Power Failure Detector will light up when Over-Voltage, Under-Voltage, Over-Temperature, Over-Current, Over-Loading, and Short circuit occur.
  4. PCI-e Connector with bead core protection to minimize EMI for reducing noises.
  5. Five Year Warranty
