Arctic Silver 5

Even though Arctic Silver already had a good product, they went back to the drawing board and addressed a number of consumer concerns. Those concerns being:

  • Ease of Application
  • Better Thermal Conductivity
  • More viscosity for better long term results

Techwarelabs used the 3.5 Gram tube on the following processor.

The AMD Barton 2500+ runs at a stock speed of 1800mhz and utilizing Arctic Silver 3, it obtained a nice 2.0ghz at 35C. We wanted to double that overclock while maintaining cool temps. A little later on you will see if Arctic Silver 5 helped that become a reality.

The first thing we noted in the labs was that upon removal and cleaning of the processor core to prepare for the new application of Arctic Silver 5, the old application (4 months old) had already been squeezed thin from between the core and the heatsink. This is a common problem with thermal pastes, the paste used has to little viscosity and is squeezed out easily under pressure. Once we cleaned both the processor core and the waterblock bottom surface we were ready to apply Arctic Silver 5.
