AMD X2

Topic:  Processors
Provider:  AMD
Manufacturer:  AMD

Test Setup:

AMD 64 Athlon X2 4800+
Maxtor 160GB 8MB cache
Asus A8N SLI (Beta Bios)
1GB 2x512 Corsair Pc3200Pro
Windows XP Pro SP2 (32 Bit)
Windows XP Pro 64 bit Edition

While we did have setup issues related to the motherboard, these were related to the bios. The X2 was entirely stable in both Windows XP Pro environments even when overclocked. The X2 although rated at a max thermal output of 110W ran at a very mild temperature. The X2 had an operating range between 32C and 38C with the included heatpipe enabled Thermaltake HSF.

Overclocking

Even with the beta bios on the Asus A8N SLI we were able to squeeze an extra 240mhz out of the AMD X2 4800+ right out of the box. The system would boot at 2750 but not into Windows, and it failed post at 2800. This is not bad considering it was a beta bios we were playing with. We then proceded to install Windows 64 Bit Edition and the install flew by.

Side note: Have you ever seen a full install of Windows XP Pro complete in less than 15 minutes? We at TWL have now.
