Upgrading an old Compaq...

A friend of mine just got a computer for his daughter, and asked if I could update it for him. As I expected, I ran into some problems. Got to remember it's compaq...

Alright, first off, he wanted windows 98 on it. I wrote all the origanal drivers down, formatted, and installed 98. Everything seems to work so far except the IDE controlers. It detects the 2 HDs, but will not detect the CD ROM. I looked for the drivers (OPTi Dual PCI, Viper chipset) and their website said windows comes with the correct drivers, but some mods have to be done to the INF. I tried this, but still got the same problems...

My second problem, well, not so much a problem, I also upgraded the processor. The problem...I don't know the speed of the processor. It was given to me with a glued on HS, and a sticker on the bottom. I tried to color in the sticker to find any indintions, and I found iPP. I got the processor going at 166MHz, and it works quite well, but I would like to know the speed it was made to run at...

As for finding the drivers for the IDE controller I would actually looking directly on Compaq website. Over the past few months they have done a lot of work on their driver section. You can get almost any driver for every model computer they ever made. The link to the driver section is : http://www.compaq.com/support/files/

For the processor, I really do not think you can find out what it is without taking the heatsink off. Try looking on the bottom and see if you see any serial numbers. Thanks...but compaq's site didn't have the drivers If anyone knows where I could fine them, the computer is a Compaq Presario 9548.

And about the processor...I can't get the HS off, as it's glued on very well. Then, there is a sticker on the bottom. It must be made of metal, because it seems there's no way to get it off... Oh well, I think it's working fine, even if it's overclocked...

i have an old P133 thats got a hs so uber glued onto it that i cant take it off too

the HSF is stock
it has the smallest fan for a processor ive seen
probably cause 6x86 were the first processors to really require a fan for it...

If the processor says iPP, that means it's an Intel Pentium Pro. I'm not sure if this helps any.

Can you try to use Windows Update to find a driver for the CD-ROM?
