Living with the H2 Handy Recorder

Out of the box, the H2 Handy Recorder decides to record 24-bit 4400hz wav, allowing for only about 45 minutes’ worth of recording time with the stock 512MB SD card. Only after adjusting the settings to 320kbps mp3 did I get a much more preferable two hours and 40 minutes.

The last mark against the H2 Handy Recorder is that it seems to be a battery hog. I’ve had this thing on for a combined total of maybe 30 minutes and the battery indicator is already down one bar out of three. There is a setting that recalibrates the battery indicator for either standard or recordable batteries. A set of rechargeable batteries seems to squeeze out enough juice for a couple more short interviews in between charges.

Use caution if using the H2 Handy Recorder to interview touchy subjects. In the field, even a veteran reporter's recording gear is no match for a veteran pit bull.

Now, as for what I like about the H2 Handy Recorder. I like ports and I like buttons. The H2 has a connection for DC9V 300mA (cable included) so you can record your next meeting or band jam session without worrying about battery power as long as you’re near a wall socket. It’s got a port for earphones/RCA output, and cables for both are included in the box. It’s got a line in port, allowing you to record directly from your computer, and a port for an external microphone. Last, it has the aforementioned USB port, allowing for quick and easy transfer of files to and from the unit’s internal storage.

The push button interface isn’t exactly intuitive, but the learning curve is about as steep as your average wheelchair ramp. The clearly labeled menu system is easy to navigate, and the backlight makes sure you’ll be able to see what you’re doing in any lighting conditions.

Conclusion

In sum, the Zoom H2 Handy Recorder is well worth the price for somebody who has a need for crystal clear audio in just about any environment, plays guitar in a Led Zeppelin cover band, and has large ears. For simply recording voices at meetings or classes, you’re probably better off with something that's not so feature packed. Either way, the H2 Handy Recorder reproduces sound brilliantly and is a must-have for those who demand perfection.

The H2 Handy Recorder by Zoom is available from Amazon.com for under $200.
