Fanatec Porsche 911 Racing Wheel
Main Parts: Steering Wheel
Next we take a look at each of the individual main parts that make-up the Porsche 911 Turbo Wheel system. The main part of the system is in fact the steering wheel. The steering wheel is a replica of the Porsche 911 Wheel and has real hand-stitched leather covering it. The look, feel and smell of real leather immediately hits you as you open the bag that surrounds it.
From the images, you can clearly see the bright Porsche shield logo that is so handsomely and proudly displayed in the center of the wheel. The three spokes of the wheel double not only as support but also house the many programmable control buttons that are used during game play. The buttons are set in pairs but rock to function as individual buttons. On the front side of the wheel, there are four programmable control buttons on the left side spoke, four programmable control buttons on the right side spoke and at the bottom spoke, there are two buttons, the upper of the two being an 8-position "hat" switch and the lower-most being a pair of programmable buttons. On either side of the steering wheel housing, are the connectors for optionally plugging in the pedals and to power the entire unit, as well as holes and the connectors to interconnect the gear shifters to the main wheel housing. On the under side of the steering wheel housing, we find two large rubber feet and the clamping camber-mechanism that holds the Porsche Wheel housing securely to the table tops. On the backside of the wheels' spokes, you find the recessed left & right two finger shifter-levers that are indicative of F1 racing car simulations that support sequential gearbox operation for changing gears. Just above the center of the wheel is the user's very easy to use LED display and "tuning button" interface which gives the user direct fine-tuning abilities. Using this display we were able to make many fine tuned adjustments to the steering wheel's settings , force feedback settings , pedals feedback settings all without leaving the sim! This is a fantastic idea allowing you to fine tune without backing out to the main game screen or to desktop each time, which we all know becomes very tedious. We also heard that there is the possibility in the future for Fanatec to release a driver update that will provide the ability to show game information out to this LED display for the user.
The construction of the steering wheel is first class. From the the high quality Porsche silver paint job and the hand stitched leather to the cooling vents for the powerful force-feedback Mabuchi RS 550 motors, the table-top clamping mechanism and the many fully programmable buttons provided indicate to the consumer that this German Engineered steering wheel system is first-rate. The wheel system mounts to tabletops using a clamp and camber-leg to maintain the wheel snug to the table. It is a very well thought out design.
