Itami FiTrainer

Author:  Thomas "Erik" Engelhardt

Provider:  Itami
Manufacturer:  Itami

Fit/Feel and Setup:

The FiTrainer fits comfortably around the ears and neckband seemed to fit quite nice as well. As far as weight, it really is quite light, even with the AAA battery inside. The heart rate monitor clips to the ear lobe and I found it somewhat bothersome, but that may just be a personal opinion; though it's not any more bothersome while running.

Setup is fairly simple allowing you to get it and yourself up and running in no time. The instructions show what is being displayed on the LCD. You begin by setting up what exercise mode you wish to work with, select whether or not you want the built in back ground music, input your age, and then hit start to establish your resting heart rate. Beyond that it's just following the narrators fairly pleasant voice.

Testing/Use:

For testing, I used the FiTrainer on the jogging mode and followed along to the automated beat/exercise that was instructed.

The testing was done around a small pond outdoors, I entered my age (22) and took my heart rate after hitting start(the heart rate monitor does not display your heart rate, sadly). The voice begins by telling you to warm up to the beat. A very sharp beat begins and after a while increases with time. As you advance in speed you transition from the warm-up to the workout. While running, the beat stops when you are at the ideal heart rate. I noticed often when it stopped I would begin to slightly overwork and the narrator would tell me to follow the beat and be a little more gentle with my jogging. After the work out a cool-down mode begins very similar to the warm-up mode.

Conclusion:

The FiTrainer represents itself as a very handy piece of equipment that, with time, could possibly get you into fairly decent shape. The FiTrainer works well and is fairly comfortable to wear while exercising, but lacks stereo sound. The price is also fairly moderate at $39.99 from the itami.com web site. I found that the helpful voice kept up my motivation to run, yet, the beat that came from the one speaker in the headphones got a little too repetitive. If you are looking to get back into shape, and are specifically looking for motivation in jogging, walking or doing aerobics, this seems to be a very wonderful piece of equipment. Obviously though, if you are looking for something more complicated to fulfil your endorphin euphoria, then you should probably look else where.
