Discount Laptops Sager 8790

Review by Jason Jacobs on 10/19/04

Under the Hood of Discount Laptops 8790

In true Techware Labs fashion, we just had to take a look at what's under the hood and show you the insides of the 8790.

Here you can see shots of the twin hard drive bays, and beneath one of the bays rests the Gigabyte 802.11g Wireless LAN MiniPCI Adapter. Also shown is the included 2GB of PC3200 SODIMMs. The Bluetooth adapter is not pictured, but is located under the second hard drive bay. Our configuration arrived with the speedy 7,200 RPM notebook hard drive. A second drive is an optional add-on, which can be used in a RAID array. The switch for RAID mode is located in the hard drive bay (which seems to be a logical place).

Bison Webcam

This additional standard feature of the 8790 is tucked away in the lid of the laptop and may be missed altogether. Less than a half inch in diameter, the Bison Cam can be used as a webcam or a digital camera. The Bison cam operates at 640x480 and is very sensitive to light, as are most digital cameras. With good lighting, the Bison Cam is right on in terms of color and responsiveness, but subjects can take on a pale or hazy look in poor lighting and the responsiveness becomes quite laggy. This feature could be quite useful to a business professional for video-conferencing, and a neat gadget for video chats for the average consumer.
