Activation

Activating the phone is pretty easy, just call up Alltel and provide them a bit of basic information.  For me the phone didn’t activate the first time, I didn’t really feel like the guy I was talking to on the phone was competent.  Regardless, I had to borrow a friend’s phone because even though he was too incompetent to activate my new phone he sure could turn the old one off.  Make sure you have another phone handy just in case. When I called them back I was directed to a network engineer who had me change a few configuration items and I was good to go.

Kingston Micro SD Card

To transfer songs and movies to and from your phone you simply need to save them to your microSD card and plug it into your computer.  Kingston sells microSD cards that work well with the Glimmer and have a handy microSD-to-USB adapter that make getting your files easy, even without a card reader. Below is a picture of the microSD card that Kingston was kind enough to give us for this review, notice the adapters to make your life easier.

Computer Connectivity

Disclaimer: In order to hook your phone up to your computer you are going to have to do a few things that could damage your phone permanently.  Thus, I’m going to recommend that you do not use any of the following programs.

Because there are no official drivers out for the Glimmer you’re going to have to use a driver to a very similar phone.  I’d recommend checking out the Verizon phones that look similar to the Glimmer, most of them will work just fine (the newer the better).  After installing the driver there are two programs that allow you to interact with your phone.  One is pretty idiot-proof and will still allow you to add ringtones.  That program is called BitPim and there is a lot of help out on the internet about how to use it.  A full tutorial of placing ringtones on your phone can be found here and should be sufficient for most users.

The second program is much more powerful, it’s the program I’m using to generate the screen shots of the phone that you are seeing in this review.  You can change ANYTHING on your phone with it, including information that should not be changed.  The program is called QPST and is distributed by Qualcomm to cell phone vendors and service providers.  I’m not sure the legal ramifications of acquiring this program, so I suggest you don’t use it or use Google to look for it.
