Testing

4x Western Digital 1TB SATA (continued)

After formatting, in RAID 5, these drives have a capacity of about 2.75 TB.

CrystalDiskMark reports the sequential read speed of 158.7 MB/s is on par with other 1TB drives in the industry. You can see the effects of RAID5 on the random access times. They are only about 20 percent of what they were on the RAID0 test. That is a huge performance hit. Most games will suffer some ill effects from having a slow random access time. So for gaming, RAID0 is the way to go here.

Datamarck confirms the previous test results: Sequential write speed around 150 MB/s sequential read time. In this test the drive sports a 10.9 ms seek time which is comparable to the previous configuration.

Once again, the performance of the array is fairly uniform across the board. In the Sandra read test, the array did not perform quite as spectacularly as it did before, but it still puts on quite a show. The consistency of the read speed is the most important aspect and in that the array, it does quite well.

Once again, the array (configured as RAID5) is an absolute monster for performing write operations. Look at how it blows away the competition in the Sandra write test.
