Eagle Arion ET-AR504LR-BK 2.1 Speakers

Testing Continued

On the usability side of things, there were some issues that made getting the most out of these speakers frustrating. The cable lengths were uniformly short, which will present problems for those who prefer to set the subwoofer off in a corner. Given that the cables use standard RCA and minijack plugs, this could be fixed with a trip to the local electronics store for a couple of extension cables, but it would have been nice to see longer cables included by default.

The LCD display on the subwoofer, while pretty, is functionally useless for adjusting sound levels. It does not display adjustment levels for volume, bass or treble; which makes finding your ideal settings a matter of guess-and-check. If you are in the habit of powering off your speakers when you shut down the computer, you’ll have to play the adjustment game every time you turn them on. The front panel controls make little sense, and the manual is both tiny and unhelpful. The remote is somewhat easier to use, but getting things just right is still a matter of counting button presses. The reset button on the remote makes for a handy oops button, but an option to store one or more presets would have been preferred.

Conclusion

In the end, Eagle Tech has delivered us something of a mixed bag. These speakers look great, and can be made to sound wonderful, if you’re not a bass-a-holic. Getting them situated and set-up, however, can be a chore. As much as I’d like to bash them more…these are still the best damn $50 speakers I’ve ever heard. There’s better to be had if you can spare the cash, naturally, but you’d have to spend over $100 to find a serious improvement in sound quality. If your aim is to replace the discourtesy speakers that came with your Dell without breaking the bank, these will certainly be a satisfying step up.
