GlacialTech X-Wing Series Laptop/Notebook Cooler

Testing:

Two types of tests were run. The first test is aimed to see how much the X-Wing R1 would effect the laptops battery life while not plugged in. The second test is based on how well the notebook cooler really “cools.” Prime95 was used as a way of stressing the CPU and HWMoniter was used to observe the laptop’s temperatures under stressed and idle conditions.

Toshiba Satellite P205

  • Width – 15.7 in
  • Depth – 11.3 in
  • Height – 1.8 in
  • Weight – 7.3 lbs
  • Processor – Intel Core Duo T2350 1.86GHz
  • RAM – 2GB DDR2
  • Hard Drive – 120 GB SATA-150 5400 rpm
  • Display – 17 in TFT active matrix
  • Graphics – Intel GMA 950

The laptop during the first test lasted a total of 3 hours and 5 minutes while sitting idle. When the X-Wing R1 laptop cooler was plugged into the laptop, it only lasted 1 hour and 53 minutes before battery life wore out. Although, this seems to be a draw back because the X-Wing R1 seems to use quite a bit of battery life, the likelihood of someone moving about with the laptop cooler compared to staying stationary where they have the ability to plug into an outlet seems very unlikely.

The second test observed the laptop’s temperatures.

CPU without x-Wing R1 CPU with X-Wing R1
Idle 65 C (148 F) 60 C (139 F)
Stressed 88 C (190 F) 79 C (174 F)
hwmidle1 hwmstress1
hwmidle2 hwmstress2

I was very surprised by the 5 degree Celsius drop in idle and even more surprised by the nearly 10 degree Celsius drop when the CPU was stressed. Very nice results, although my laptop still seems to be running very hot.

Conclusion:

If you are not immediately drawn to the X-Wing R1 by it’s very pleasing looks, then maybe the test results will be persuasive enough. The touch panel is a very useful feature while also giving the X-Wing R1 a very new look to laptop coolers. I don’t see myself using the added on media keys for the most part, however, for those who want to sit down and listen to music and not have to deal with a touch pad, mouse or random tapping at the keyboard on the laptop it seems to have use. In many ways, the X-Wing R1 exceeded my expectations as a cooling device. Overall, a wonderful product from GlacialTech.
