Conclusion:
Despite the shortcomings that our engineering samples had, we were still extremely impressed with the performance of the Intel i7 920. The overclocking ability of the chip alone makes it a must have. Reports across the internet of the new D0 stepping of the chip have the overclocks reaching above 4 GHz and overall running much cooler than the C0 stepping that we tested. Even though there aren’t many applications out currently that can take full advantage of 8 virtual processors, for $280 it is not an expensive investment for the future. Windows 7 is supposed to be even more multithreaded than Vista was, so we may see even more potential from this chip in the near future. For being one of the best processors that we have reviewed, we would like to award it the Editor’s Choice award.
When we test hardware, we try to do everything that we can to make the bottleneck of the rig that piece of hardware. In this review, the reviewer was using 2 – 4870’s in Crossfire. This gives a fairly good benchmark point for what you will expect to see.
I find all the game benches to be lacking in comparative data. All we find out is where your rig gives out of being playable, not how much a difference the 920 is doing. It could very well be that you are reaching the capacity of what the graphics card is able to display and that the CPU isn’t involved much at all.

PCG is a processor power specification to help identify thermal solutions, power supplies, and chassis that will meet specific power requirements. The PCG mark can be found on the box label and engraved on the IHS of the processor.
