Kingston SSDNow 40 GB Solild State Drive

Testing

The time has come now to see if this drive is up to par with its competitors. Without further adieu here is the rig and test that we are going to be using to bench mark the drive:

HD Tune test was the first test I ran and to be quite honest I was caught by surprise at the read speeds of this drive. Kingston advertised speeds up to 170 MB/s but what I experienced was quite different. The read speeds were above 200 MB/s. It is a fact that smaller SSDs tend to have better speeds, but this drive was reading at a speed of a RAID 0 array of Seagate drives we’ve tested.

The price of the staggering read speeds was paid by the write speeds. While the 64 GB and the 128 GB models have 70 MB/s write speeds, the 40GB version demonstrated speeds in 40s’ MB/s which is substantially lower than average.

Another part of the test consisted of random access times and AAM(Automatic Acoustic Management) test .Though the Kingston SSDNow 40 GB SSD has no need for this feature since it does not have any moving parts, the value that we are going to be looking at is the access time. The result of this test was 0.1 ms.

The next test measures the time and the speed it takes to read a file from the drive. There were a total of four different file sizes of 512 bytes to 1 MB. The times were 0.08 to 4.5 and reading speeds were 5.9 MB/s to 222.1 MB/ s respectively.
