LaCie 2Big NAS 6TB (9000226) Review

NAS OS 2.0

In January of this year, LaCie released the latest update to their network storage software dubbed NAS OS 2.0. This is the first product we have seen come stock with the latest update (other versions can updated to NAS 2.0 through the automatic updater). Lets take a look at the major upgrade differences:

• NAS-to-NAS Backups: This is a great option for further redundency in your files allowing you to backup a smaller NAS to a larger NAS (2big Network 2 backing up to a 2Big NAS for example)
• Easy remote access with MyNas iPhone/iPad app: This takes the work out of setting up a Dynamic DNS server and lets LaCie do the work for you by setting up at http://mynas.lacie.com/.

Benchmarks

Here we will see if the upgraded processer included in the LaCie 2big NAS is actually making a difference in read/write times. We will be looking at the device in both RAID 1 and RAID 0 setups. RAID 1

Knowing RAID, I expected RAID 1 to be the slower of the two so I didn’t expect to see us hit our 100MB/s read or 55MB/s Write. We averaged at 55MB/s Read and 45MB/s Write. RAID 0

RAID 0 is going to be the faster of the two. We saw an average of 71MB/s Read and 50MB/s write.   During our testing we did see the transfer rate start out around 100MB/s read and 55MB/s write while in RAID 0 so I can’t fault LaCie for posting the Burst Transfer Rates. Accessing small files at a time might actually result in 100MB/s and 55MB/s respectively but know that the averages are lower than the posted transfer times. Comparing these speeds to the ~35MB/s we saw with the 2Big Network 2 we see that the upgraded ARM processor is definately making a difference.
