The first impression of the MXL FR-310 is great. The microphone comes in a small but sturdy aluminum container for traveling. While you might think this is unnecessary it definitely adds to the usability and longevity of the unit. The FR-310 itself is constructed of aluminum with a composite plastic hot shoe mount and plastic tightening ring. Inside the aluminum travel container you will find the FR-310 and a single AAA battery which powers the unit. This single battery can last up to 500 hours according to MXL, a statistic which we didn’t test. The FR-310 features a red LED built into the side which glows red when the battery is getting weak as an indicator that its time for a new battery.

Overall we were very impressed with the build quality and product packaging of the MXL FR-310. You will not be disappointed upon opening the box here, while the included extras are minimal what you do get is quality. You will be pleased that MXL chose to include a quality travel container as in the long run this will save your FR-310 from breakage and undue wear.

MXL FR-310 Shotgun Microphone Specifications

The MXL FR-310 has three gain settings at -5dB, 0dB, +5dB, and a Bass roll-off (high-pass filter) which is handy for reducing rumble, handling, pop and wind noise which are found in the lower frequencies. If you plan to take the FR-310 outside or in a non tripod mounted setting then the Bass roll-off can be handy for further elimination of unwanted noise.

As you can see the MXL is a small unit which attaches nicely to any DSLR camera you would want it and is usable so long as your camera comes equipped with a standard microphone input jack. Plug in the jack, turn the FR-310 on, adjust to your desired settings and begin recording.
