Additional features of significance include the support of the Sony PS3 to browse the DS209+ for multimedia content. Surveillance Station, by default allows one support IP camera like our reviewed Panasonic BL-C1A to be used as a networked video recorder without the need for a PC. The DS209+ can support more than one IP camera, but an additional license will need to be purchased from Synology’s web site. Additional functionality of the Surveillance Station is the ability to take motion activated photos from the IP camera and e-mail these photos to you. So for those of you who have this setup at your house you can have these photos e-mailed to your cell phone giving you a piece of mind of who is at your front door while you are away from home. This reviewer has had this feature setup for about a month prior to this review being posted and I was shocked to see the high number of sales people who come to my front door while I was at work. My future plans are to purchase an additional IP camera which will sit on the side of the house to monitor the side and backyard of the house. Conclusion
The DS209+ is a great full featured replacement for the DS207+. The DS209+ like the DS207+ is a NAS device for both home and business use. During the time of this review Synology announced the support of 2 terabyte drives (click here to see what drives are supported by the DS209+). Also as stated in the introduction the support of NFS appeals to those who are using VMware ESX Enterprise at work and want to build up a lab. The DS209+’s processor isn’t going to be able to handle the load of too many virtual machines over NFS connection, so one of the Synology enterprise NAS systems should be considered if your looking to put a Synology NAS to work in an ESX environment with business level I/O. The power consumption and management the DS209+ comes with makes it a very green product and I applaud Synology for building such an excellent energy minded product.
