The Microphone
To be honest, my first impression of the microphone was incredibly negative. Overall the Shock Spin gives the impression of a quality gaming headset, providing the comfort and sound quality that are a perfect combination for long hours of usage; however, a separate clip-on mic is not at all the norm for today’s gaming peripherals. Not only does this provide the additional encumbrance of having a microphone clipped to your shirt, but it also requires an additional cable running to your rig.
Thankfully, the microphone exceeded my wildest expectations. The recording quality is phenomenal, more than adequate to leave the mic clipped anywhere on a desk and still pick up speech in quality that is more than adequate for all but the most critical of users.
Gaming Performance
After the performance provided while playing music, it should come as no surprise that the Shock Spin provides amazing sound quality in virtually any gaming situation that can be thrown at it. Starcraft 2, Team Fortress 2, Heroes of Newerth, CoD: Black Ops, Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Mass Effect 2: the Shock Spin creates a fantastic sound environment for every game I could throw at it. Sadly, like when testing music, when many layers of sound are played at once sound quality can become a bit muddled; thankfully the slight drop in sound quality is only truly noticeable when looking for it.
The Shock Spin does have one glaring flaw when used in a gaming environment, however, it cannot effectively create a surround sound environment due to a lack of 5.1 support (through additional speakers or programming wizardry). This is both a boon and a curse, as it also allows the Spin to have the incredibly light and comfortable construction I raved about in previous sections. Thankfully, this is only noticeable in FPS games, and in no way impacted my enjoyment of any RTS or RPG I tested the headset with (in fact, in many of the RTS games I was thankful for a lack of 5.1 sound, as it can cause strange distortions in sound quality while in an overhead perspective).
