x264 HD Benchmark 4.0:

H.264 is a popular video compression codec. Most mobile device now support some kind of hardware accelerated H.264 decoding. Therefore it’s not uncommon for users to want to transcode their existing videos to be able to play on all their devices. TechARP has created a real world benchmark that passes a 720p video to the popular x264 encoder and then measures how quickly it completes the 2-pass encoding process. It does 4 runs of the encoding process and then outputs the results to a word document.

2-pass encoding works by collecting data about the average bitrate throughout the video on the first pass. On the second pass is where the actual encoding takes place. We can see that on pass 2 the CPU is able to encode at around 27.8 fps. Since the source video was created at 24.5 fps, the system is able to encode the video in slightly faster than real time. Not shabby at all.

CINEBENCH 11.5:

CINEBENCH is a benchmark that measures a CPU’s performance when rendering a 3D scene. It is scalable up to 32 processors, and makes for a decent real world benchmark for determining a CPU’s potential in the 3D graphics market.

In this benchmark it’s usually whatever CPU has the most threads comes out on top. It’s not the case in this instance. We can see the E3-1220 come out ahead of the i7 that CINEBENCH has on record, but still falls shy of the 3.20GHz i7.
