GlacialTech Igloo 5760

Testing

installed

Installed in our test system, the Igloo 5760 had plenty of space on all sides. As mentioned before, it does overhang the RAM sockets, but this is only a concern with unusually tall RAM. Talking of test systems, here’s ours:

Test System
CPU AMD Phenom II X4 910e
Heatsink GlacialTech Igloo 5760
Motherboard Jetway Hummer HA-09
Chipset AMD 890GX
Graphics card ATI Radeon HD 4830
RAM 2x2GB GeIL DDR3-1333, 7-7-7-24 timings
HDD 1 Seagate 7200.10 500GB
HDD 2 Western Digital Caviar Green 500GB
Power Supply Nexus RX-6300 630W
Case Silverstone Fortress FT-02
OS Windows 7 Ultimate
Drivers Catalyst 10.4 unified drivers

For our tests, we recorded the temperatures reported by the CPU’s on-die sensors when the system was sitting at idle, running under 100% load, and “maxed out” with the Stress Prime Orthos benchmark running on all 4 cores. We let the motherboard control the fan speed automatically. Temperatures were averaged over a period of 30 minutes for each phase, and the tests were run late at night, with an ambient temperature of 23°C.

performance

The results are quite impressive for such a compact cooler: 8 degrees above ambient at idle, with a 9 degree rise at 100% load. Even during our Stress Prime benchmark, which is designed to heat up the CPU as much as possible, the temperature never got above 39°C, a scant 11 degrees above ambient. Fan noise was inaudible at idle, ramping up to a quiet hum at full speed. The sound is definitely noticeable, but pleasant and smooth.

Thoughts & Conclusion

GlacialTech has been consistent in delivering what I would term “invisible” technology: products that work well, consistently, and unobtrusively. The Igloo 5760 does a lot with its modest size and budget cost, delivering performance normally associated with larger coolers with a higher price premium. If you’re looking to build a small form-factor system, performance system, or even for your everyday needs this cooler is ideally suited for your needs—provided you aren’t too restricted on height, that is.
