Unreal Tournament 3
For game developers looking to make a good-looking game without reinventing the wheel, Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 is the engine of choice. Unreal Tournament 3, while perhaps not as popular as Gears of War, is the best example of what UE3 can do when the folks at Epic decide to really push it. Unfortunately, UE3 doesn’t allow HDR lighting and anti-aliasing at the same time, so AA was left off for these tests. Testing was done with a timedemo of a 16-player deathmatch on DM-OceanRelic. This map, which was added as a part of the free Titan Pack expansion, features a detailed environment, multiple physics-altering volumes within the level, and earthquakes that shake the whole level from time to time. For these tests, framerate smoothing and v sync were turned off, all detail sliders turned up to full, and all optional graphical enhancements turned on.
The Athlon II 240e performed spectacularly on this test, pushing out an average of 95 frames per second. Turning on v sync would actually be recommended here, as this framerate is high enough to cause tearing issues on most monitors.
Increasing the resolution brought no major slowdowns, with the framerate still averaging about 76 frames per second.
