Epic Gear Meduza Gaming Mouse with Hybrid Dual Sensor Technology

My testing with the Meduza was overall good. I found the mouse to be very comfortable, but a little limiting. What I mean by that is because of the heavily sculpted shape, you can really only hold it a few ways. There is a spot for each finger and they pretty much have to stay there. This wasn’t a big deal because the sculpted positions are very well placed.

As far as performance, the mouse tracked remarkably well on the Hybrid Pad and almost as good on other surfaces. Movement was extremely smooth and responsive thanks to the Meduzas low friction feet and the Hybrid Pad design.

When switching between the sensors, I found the differences to be fairly negligible between optical, laser, and HDST. I ended up using the laser setting exclusively because it allows for very small adjustments to DPI rather than the massive leaps the other two options have to choose from. I feel that this will be the case for the majority of gamers.

I found that the two customizable buttons on the side were enough for most games, but slightly restricting in MMOs. Although the top button behind the scroll wheel is customizable, it is too far out of the way for the ultra quick access tasks you generally would assign to a mouse. Furthermore, the side buttons are very easy to press, which when combined with them being so close to your thumb can lead to accidental presses in heated situations.

The scroll wheel was one of the best I have used. It is very smooth but still gives your that tactile bump you need in a gaming situation. The left and right click buttons themselves felt solid and were very quiet.

Conclusion

Pros:

• Comfortable design
• Excellent tracking
• Extremely smooth movement
• A few customizable buttons
• Multiple profiles
• Solid construction
• Choice of either laser, optical, or both

Cons:

• Could use one more macro button on the side.
• Side buttons a little too easy to press
• Price is pretty steep

Overall I was pleased with the Meduza. The HDST will be a big deal for people who can really appreciate the difference between the two sensors or those who have wanted to try one or the other but were hesitant to switch. It is a comfortable mouse with good customization and solid looks. My only complaint is with the squishy side buttons that I wish the profile select function could be moved to the top, allowing for an extra side button to be used for a macro.

At $80, the Meduza is at the high end of the gaming mouse market and for most gamers I would say that there are better mice for less money. But if you are looking for a comfortable, customizable gaming mouse and are interested in testing the benefits of laser and optical, then this wouldn’t be a bad buy.
