Closer Look

Here we see the WangBuds unique design. With a large, circular shell and soft silicon tips, these obviously aren’t your standard buds. The “sippy cup” design of the tips is specifically made to sit in your ear, but not in your ear canal. The handle tucks in to your ear and locks the buds in place without having them “press in” and the little tube extension then funnels the sound right in.

The inline mic and volume control are a nice feature to have, but unfortunately only support Apple products. The plug is very high quality with a gold plated connector and metal design. It is a little longer than I would have liked though, making it stick out quite a ways before the cord starts.
You can also see here the triangular cord, which helps to minimize tangling.

Fit and Comfort

Getting the WangBuds to fit properly was a little bit tricky, requiring me to swap back and forth to different tips to get them to sit right. But once I finally got them sorted I was surprised with the comfort. Because they don’t press into your ear canal you can wear them for extended periods of time with no discomfort.

The ear lock worked surprisingly well, keeping the buds right where they should be and not letting them work themselves free over time.

Sound Quality

Up until this point I was very pleased with the WangBuds and had high hopes for the sound quality, especially considering that it has two drivers inside, one of which is quite large and should deliver killer bass.

There is clear spatial distinction in most situations, allowing you to really separate the different instruments and hear those small background effects that might not come though on a cheap pair of headphones. Unfortunately though that is where the praise ends and the problems begin.

As soon as the bass starts to crank up, these things completely fall on their face. There is no punch and they become excessively muddy.
Even in songs where the bass is moderate (rock, country, etc) they just don’t sound good. They sound as if you took a regular pair of earbuds and pulled them out of your ear a half inch, like the buds weren’t quite “all the way in”. To top that off they don’t get very loud before they start breaking up.
