Fit, Feel, and Function:
With the case unpacked and iPad in hand, time to get started with the install. Using the included hex key wrench, I removed the three screws that fix the bottom portion of the Moat-2 case. Before installing my iPad, I took note of the foam rubber material that lined the inside of the case that prevents metal on metal contact between the iPad and the case. This was one of my concerns with an aluminum case, and it’s good to see that isn’t an issue here. With the bottom portion removed, the iPad slid right into the case. At this point, all that was needed was to slide the bottom portion on, re-insert the (extremely tiny) screws, and I was done. With the case installed, the last step was to adhere the carbon fiber back plate in the open area on the back of the iPad. Total install time was less than 5 minutes, and the hardest parts were ensuring that the screw holes were properly lined up to accept the screws and properly lining up the carbon fiber back plate (which takes a bit of a steady hand).
With the case installed it was time to evaluate its fit and functionality. The fit, simply put…was perfect. The Moat-2 felt like a natural extension of the iPad and installed added almost no noticeable weight. Working around the edges, the cutouts were well placed and allowed for easy access to the iPad’s various ports and buttons (especially appreciated the wide opening for the volume and orientation switch). The left side of the case is open enough to accommodate an Apple Smart Cover, which is a great touch. The included handle is multi-functional, allowing you to carry your iPad “briefcase” style or it can be used as a stand for table top operation. When the handle isn’t in use, it folds up nicely and is rigid enough not to loosely flap around (which is something I was concerned about).
The Wand stylus performed marvelously and my initial concern with the size of the rubber tip was immediately gone after a few seconds of use. The tip is soft, so no concern with wear on the screen. With its CNC machined aluminum anodized construction, the finish is smooth, but tactile enough to not slip from your grip. Like I noted earlier, the Wand stylus has a really good weight, similar to an expensive pen, and that’s the best way I would describe this. It doesn’t really “outperform” a run-of-the-mill stylus, but there is no debate of it being nicer.
