Overclocking
Overclocking RAM in general is a very finicky business. The reason for that is because the “tuning” process is for the most part done a trial and error basis. You adjust/crash until reaching a figure you are satisfied with. Corsair Dominator ‘s XMP, however, provided an excellent baseline for overclocking. In fact, I did not need to do anything to the volatges in order to overclock the RAM to 1744 MHz (144 MHz Overclock). The suggested DOCP, on the other hand, did not work.
CPU-Z shows us the overclocked values of 1740 MHz (870 x 2).
memset average has increased by 800 MB/s from 8100 to 8900 MB/s
memcpy average has increased by 900 MB/s from 5700 to 6500 MB/s
The Memory Bandwidth has increased by 2 GB/s from 25 GB/s to 27 GB/s.
The latency has decreased by 5 ns from 64 to 59 ns.
Conclusion
The Corsair Dominator line of RAM prides itself in being one of the best performers in the market. The question is then whether or not this particular kit stands up to its name. While the results were sightly mixed across the bench, the kit performed in the same category as kits clocked at 1800 MHz. Furthermore, the overclocability of the RAM essentially erased the gap between the the two as was earlier demonstrated SiSoft Sandra tests. The price of this particular kit hovers right above the $200 mark which makes it rather pricey. But in my mind $205 is a steal for what is essentially a 6GB kit of Corsair Dominator 1600MHz that can be easily turned into a 1800 MHz kit with the change of a button. I basically have no option but to award this kit with the TechwareLabs Editors Choice Award. Doing anything else would simply be an injustice to this masterpiece.
