Epson WorkForce 840 Inkjet Printer

The WorkForce 840 is Feature Packed

file-save-choices

The WorkForce 840 has many features previously available only available on much more expensive models. The automatic document feeder allows users to scan copy or fax up to 30 sheets of 2 sided originals. The device whether controlled from the user’s computer of the touch screen control panel, allows users to direct that output to a variety of formats and destinations.  From the control panel one can scan to a USB drive, to a computer, or to email via a computer. In addition to these features, the WorkForce 840 also has the ability to print directly from a smart phone. I have an iPhone 4 and I was able to print directly to the WorkForce 840 within 30 seconds of downloading the app. One of the more useful features on this device is its high capacity. The printer has two, 250 sheet capacity trays so that an entire ream of paper can be loaded at a single time. This prevents a common problem with smaller capacity trays, stalled print jobs because the “out of paper” error message was not noticed. Also one can load two different paper sizes if desirable. One minor drag is that the upper tray is the only one that has the capacity to handle odd size papers (including photo paper and envelopes).  Therefore one has to periodically access this top tray. The trouble is, this forces one to close the output shelf which is not difficult. Remembering to pull it back out can be more challenging. Besides its high capacity paper trays and excellent ADF, an additional useful feature of the is its promiscuous interfacing capability; if you can connect a given piece of digital storage media to anything, chances are you can connect it to the WorkForce 840. An exhaustive list is on the specifications page, but a partial list includes: Memory Stick PRO, SDHC Memory Card, MultiMediaCard, CompactFlash, Memory Stick, MultiMediaCardplus, SD Memory Card, IBM Microdrive, USB flash drive, xD-Picture Card et. al. Other non-business critical but still cool features are preset templates that are included with the printer for graph paper and ruled paper.  One final cool feature is the fact that full sized, not “starter” or “demo” inks are bundled with the printer so that one can actually work with the device as sold right out of the box.

The WorkForce 840 is surprisingly affordable

At the time of this writing, mid April 2011, Epson was offering this device for $299 with free shipping. It was available elsewhere online for as little as $179.

The WorkForce 840 is a great solution for a small offices document handling needs. It is compact, easy to use, and has many of the features found on much more expensive and larger units. With a little careful shopping a small company could get one of these for less than $200 which makes it a great all in one and an excellent investment. I realize love is a strong word to use with an inanimate object, but if you buy a WorkForce 840, especially at a lower than MSRP price, you are going to love this printer.
