Performance:
For our testing we used 4 Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C drives in a RAID 5. When dealing with large amounts of data, RAID 5 is the best trade off between data redundancy and performance.
We test the reading and writing throughput of the NAS by copying a 7.10 GB movie file to the NAS and then read it back. The drive we use to send and receive the file to the NAS is the RevoDrive, a high performance SSD with read and write speeds higher than the maximum theoretical throughput of the network connection that the Javelin has. This was done so as to eliminate any kind of bottle neck from the drive that NAS is interacting with.

Read Test | Write Test |
We see the write speed of the NAS is right around 33 MB/s. This is about what we would expect for the write speed of a RAID 5 array (RAID 5 has poor write speed, but fast read speed). The read speed is a far most impressive 82 MB/s. It can peak in the low 100’s, but the transfer rate typically hovers around the mid 80’s. 82 MB/s comes pretty close to saturating the gigabit connection that the Javelin is connected to. You can’t ask for much more than that.
Conclusion:
While the Javelin S4 may not have all the bells and whistles that the Synology DS411+ II NAS has, it does have many of them. It also cost almost half as much as the Synology. At around $400 the device can do many of the features of the more expensive devices. With the device now being rooted, you can expect a nice stream of third party applications to start rolling in. It’s a great little device that would be perfect in either a home or small office environment. This is why it gets the awesome hardware award.
