Introduction
Plextor is a familiar name to many, and they’ve built their reputation on exactly one thing: optical storage. It should be no surprise then, that they’ve extended their line to embrace the latest in high-density optical storage. Today we’ll be taking a look at the PX-B120U, a USB-bus-powered BD-ROM drive geared for movie playback.
Plextor’s Take
Before we dive in, let’s take a look at what Plextor has to say about the PX-B120U:
The PX-B120U, 4X external Blu-ray reader, enables a smooth playback of BD discs and supports 3D playback, when connected to any suitable laptop and desktop computers.
The PX-B120U offers extensive playback and reading support to Blu-ray disc and all common DVD & CD formats. It is a perfect and convenient solution to your Blu-ray and DVD movies, audio CDs needs as well as any other files you have on an optical disk.
The PX-B120U is bundled with Cyberlink’s PowerDVD utility providing high-definition playback and spectacular visual effects in 3D. The software can also convert 2D contents to simulate 3D as well as upscale standard definition to high definition viewing.
The design of PX-B120U is aesthetically pleasing and compact for portability. Power to the unit is provided through a convenient single USB port, eliminating the need for an external AC adapter. Its convenient top load design and outstanding playback capabilities make the PX-B120U the ideal drive to bring the excitement of Blu-ray movies to your laptop and desktop computer.
Clearly this drive is aimed at movie playback, with file access more of a convenient side benefit. We’ll see how well it performs in just a bit, but first, let’s crack open the box and see what we’ve got.
