Performance and Benchmarks
For the Plextor drive’s raw read performance, we turned to Nero DiscSpeed, a free drive benchmark available at their website.
For the BD-ROM test, we used the live-action remake of Alice in Wonderland, which is mastered as a dual-layer BD-ROM. The read performance of the drive was as expected, starting at 1.7x on the inner edge of the spindle and maxing out at 3.6x. Note that for BD discs, 1x is equivalent to 36Mb/sec.
For the DVD test, we used a DVD-R disc filled with large video files. The read performance was fairly good for a USB drive, starting out at 3.37x on the inner edge and speeding up to 8.10x on the outer edge. For DVD discs, 1x is equivalent to 1.32MB/s.
For the CD test, we used a mix CD filled out to 60 minutes, which represents the lower boundary on CD-R capacity. Read speeds started out at 10.44x, and maxed out at 23.36x. For CDs, 1x is 150KB/sec, the minimum speed needed to play Red Book audio.
