Thoughts and Conclusion
This Plextor drive is clearly aimed at people who want to play Blu-Ray movies on their PC, and for that task this drive is well suited. Despite my complaints with PowerDVD, playback was smooth and uninterrupted. One minor issue that cropped up was with resuming from pause after a lengthy delay. As the drive spun up, the audio would begin playing again while the video froze for several seconds. Once the drive got back to full speed, the video would race forward, often with significant visual corruption, until it caught up. This seems to be the fault of PowerDVD, though we can’t be certain.
Another minor issue is with the drive itself: at full speed, it makes a ticking noise that initially made us think something was loose and rattling around inside the case. This turned out not to be so, but it was unsettling at first. So is this Plextor drive worth buying? The lack of write support may be off-putting for some, but the relatively low price—$105 at time of publication—coupled by the inclusion of the needed player software, makes this drive worth a second look.
