Hybrid hard drives are a special breed of storage devices that combine the best of both worlds. You have the storage capacity of a platter based hard drive coupled with the performance of an SSD cache (8GB worth in this instance). This allows the drive to cache frequently used data to the SSD portion of the drive and then deliver SSD-like speeds when accessing it in the future. The Momentus XT uses what is called block-level caching. This means that it is file system agnostic. The drive doesn’t care if it’s Windows or Linux or OSX accessing its data, it just caches areas of the drive that are used most frequently.
