10 Things to Consider Before Setting Up RAID.

RAID, the final frontier. These are the voyages of...ah, who am I kidding? Choosing to implement RAID today isn’t embarking on a mission to boldly go where no one has gone before. This technology has literally been around for years, and today RAID support can be found within most operating systems, integrated on motherboards, or easily added to any system as a 3rd party controller for almost nothing (quick search on Amazon yields controllers for less than $30). With its wide availability, you may find yourself at some point contemplating taking the plunge and configuring a RAID setup on your own system. However, before doing so, there are some things you should consider.

SSD Caching – “SSD, but my friends call me cache”

For those users that want their cake and eat it too, how do we leverage the speed of SSD drives with the raw storage capacity of traditional spinning drives? The answer, SSD caching. Originally only available on higher end enterprise class storage, such as Adaptec’s maxCache or LSI’s CacheCade, this technology is beginning to show up in the consumer market. Essentially this allows a user to configure one (or more) SSD drives to be used for read or write cache for frequently accessed data residing on slower spinning HDD media. This frequently accessed data sitting on spinning HDD media will be served by the faster SSD drives, and the end result is SSD “like” performance with the raw capacity of traditional HDD media.
